Today Cassidy Grigg is still a hero to me
Many may remember after the Columbine shooting, Katie Couric's interview with one of the victim's parents as well as a classmate became a sort of familiar interview, often aired during anniversaries and such. This week Colorado became victim of another school shooting. Naturally some awaited the first interview from a Platte Canyon Student. Cassidy Grigg became that student. He was on all the news shows yesterday, along with his parents talking about his feelings on what happened, how he was dealing with the loss of a good friend, and how he dealt with the shooter taking over his classroom. According to Cassidy he told the shooter he wouldn't leave the room, was forced to by gun, but was able to stop another girl from going in the classroom. One thing struck me as odd during this interview. The mother said she was immediately concerned over her middle school age daughter, feeling she was in danger. She then stated that after praying for her safety she had a strong feeling it was not her daughter that was in danger but her son, she just knew this guy was in her son Cassidy's classroom. OK HOLD UP.. Why was she not immediately worried about her sons safety? The shooter was in the high school not the middle school. AND CONTINUE Meredith Viera ended the interview telling Cassidy he was a hero.
I then listened to the radio, the dj's were criticizing Cassidy for becoming a media whore. I must say it didn't seem odd to me this kid was on all the shows. He is a high school kid, who maybe isn't getting attention. I mean his mom was worried first about a child who wasn't a student at the school. (can someone clear up, maybe she was at the highschool for some reason) The media vultures found him, gave him his moment of fame.
Cut to today. I began my morning ritual by turning on The Today Show. My draw dropped when the anchors stated they have learned Cassidy was not in the classroom, and had made the story up. Someone said he was distraught and made up everything based on what he wishes he could have done to save his friend Emily. They then showed Cassidy apologizing for lying and hoping he could be forgiven. Meredith said she felt bad for Cassidy, Matt Lauer said in a way he feels bad but it another he feels it is DISPICABLE...
Despicable? Are we really going to come down on this boy? YOU are the MEDIA, YOU are supposed to check out the stories. YOU are despicable. How dare YOU blame this kid. Yes he lied, yes he has been called out on it, but YOU the MEDIA, are at fault. How dare YOU make such issue about it, and not say WE should have checked in to the story. The face of Cassidy was the face of this tragedy, made by YOU the media. Today you toss him aside and make him trash. Can someone tell me aside from the media issue, how it is the parents didn't know what his class schedule was? Parents should know where their kids are, whether they are at school or not, so perhaps that is despicable. Where was the teacher at? Where is the teacher now? I want to know that the teacher was not the first out the door, that would be despicable. What is the most despicable? The fact that this man came into a school, entered a classroom and shot a child. That is the most despicable. So what Cassidy wasn't in the classroom? You created him and you have now destroyed him. Yesterday he was a hero to you, today he is a hero to me.
