Armed

Monday night I attended a gun safety course. By recieving the gun safety training certificate I am now able to apply for a concealed weapons permit, should I choose to do so. Several things lead up to the decision to take this class, for which I would like to share....

At the age of 22 I began living without a roomate. I was a single woman living by myself. My first sole residence was a four-plex. I had two families living on either side of me, and thus felt fairly safe. I then bought a house. It was on the other side of town from where I grew up. Which really only means 20 minutes, but still an unfamiliar neighboorhood. I was now in my mind officially "living alone". I am a very independent person and so I enjoyed it and rarely was afraid. I was rarely afraid but not stupid, I needed some protection. A .38 special became my protector.

My father enjoyed hunting. When I was around 6 or 7, the son of my fathers hunting buddy and I had a bet on who would get a bb gun first. I think I won. Now before you get the wrong idea of my family we are not hillbilly's and only partially rednecks.. We didn't have dead animals hanging on our walls for decorations or anything like that. My father taught me about guns and growing up around them made me comfortable enough to feel safe purchasing one for myself.

So... a few years later I thankfullly have never had to use the weapon. I have had scares, the normal noises and such, but no real problems. Then this past New Years Eve I was walking to my car well after midnight, to take a friend home. A car pulled up blocking our driveway. A man got out of his vehicle and began walking towards us. As my boyfriend walked towards him I ran and got my gun. Just in case..

A few weeks ago we read about a class that was being offered for gun safety. Not only would we feel more comfortable around our guns but also if we chose to we could apply and obtain a concealed weapons permit. We signed up.

The weekend after we signed up we were supposed to meet a girlfriend for brunch and a day at the pool. She is a single girl. We have known her for a few year as an aquaintance and have recently been going out with her for drinks about once a week, and meeting at the pool on Sundays. She lives by herself and has always felt safe doing so.

Sunday morning we woke up ready to meet up with our friend hit brunch and the pool. Our phone rang and it was our friend calling to cancel our weekly date. She was just leaving the hospital.. Someone broke into her house the night before threw chemicals in her face and raped her. Our friend had experienced the ultimate violation. She had been talking the past months of getting a gun. If only she had.

Another Gay thing..

I am so stuck on this "gay" thing, I think I may be in the closet. Ok maybe not. I have not been able to shake this Oprah thing though.

I,as you know, am a female. I have had in my life several very close girlfriends. We do everything together, I have held hands with girls, I have shared beds with girls, I have even kissed girls.(don't let imaginations run wild, pecks only at probably the age of 6) I know guys who have close male friends, they do close male friend things. NO way have I ever questioned my friendships and wondered, golly gee I hope people don't think I am gay. First of all its normal bestfriend stuff, and second of all it doesn't matter. I do remember one time just a few years ago, I had been single for about 3 years. I invited a "girlfriend" to a birthday dinner at my parents house. My mother asked "is this a "good" friend". MOM!!! I'm single not gay..

Why are we once again being overloaded by Oprahs self absorbed, self righteous, big headed etc.. nonsense? A few questions.. 1. Who sits and wonders about Oprah's love life? 2. Who sits and wonders about Oprah and another woman's love life together? 3. Why on earth if we have to hear about gay lifestyles of the rich and famous, does it have to be about fat chicks(Rosie....) ?

Follow up

I have a follow up question for the previous entry. Lets say gays are born that way, are there also some that choose to be gay?

Cute and Harmless

I'm sure you all remember the controversy with cigarette ads marketing to children. It was every where. You turned on the tv and there was this cool animated camel Joe Camel, the kids loved him, tobacco folks loved him.

When you walked into convenience stores, next to abortion pills, they hand cancer sticks. No big deal really except they always seemed to be at the eye level of a 6 year old. People finally decided the big bad tobacco folks were starting to go to far. Marketing this harmful, potentially deadly sin to children is unacceptable, it was stopped

Cut to today.. I am watching tv when my favorite show cuts to a commercial break. There are two adorable puppies facing each other. One of the dogs is barking at the other. The camera pans to the cuter smaller of the puppies. I am at the edge of my seat. What will this puppy do? It moos. How cute is that? See puppies are supposed to bark and this little guy moos.. See the puppy was "born different"

The ad is one of a few ads running in my area. Yes, it is a cute harmless commercial, just like Joe was a cute harmless commercial. In the city of Colorado Springs, banners line the street. The banners are simple, they have a picture of a puppy and the simple words moo. Again, harmless right? Yeah sure if you don't mind the message they are trying to embed in your children.

I can't help but wonder why if we are angry enough about pushing harmful cigarettes on children, how are we allowing pushing homosexuality on kids?

PROUD AMERICAN

Today is the day we celebrate America's Independence. Of course we celebrate it every day by living with the freedoms we have. We have the freedom to say we think America sucks. We have the freedom to say we love America. We have the freedom to tell North Korea to shove it up their behinds. We have the freedom to say Al Gore is an idiot. We have the freedom to say we don't want ILLEGALS invading our USA anymore.

We have the rights of many things from simple to complex. Thank you to those who continue to fight for our freedom. God Bless America (oh crap can I say that??)
