No Smoking Please
I had planned on posting a different entry today, but I will push it off until tomorrow. A few years ago my city decided to go no smoking. I was torn on this decision. As an asthmatic I was thrilled but it didn't seem too fair to business owners. Several establishments lost so much business they had to close down. Smoking patrons of establishments often found themselves going outside of city limits for their guilty pleasures. This obviously meant not just less money for business' in city limits but also meant less tax dollars to our city. I often wondered why instead of a smoking ban they couldn't have enforced better ventilation in bars and restaurants.
Well the smoking ban has now expanded. Beginning July 1, 2006 Colorado will become a no smoking state. The ban however excludes casino's, the smoking lounge at DIA, and hotels and motels. Hmmmm I wonder why someone gets to decide which business don't have to suffer the impacts of the ban?
Don't get me wrong, being able to go home after a night on the town not smelling like an ashtray and being able to breath is fine with me. HOWEVER... before the ban I had the choice of going out to not so ventilated places or otherwise or God forbid, not going out at all. A ban is not the answer and I think we will see in the next few years how detrimental it is to business. Looks like those who need that nicotine fix while in a public place are going to have to join those dirty pot smokers in the bathroom stall.
